Difference between Employee Resource Groups and staff networks
“Staff groups” is an informal term used to describe networks of individuals in a workplace who share similar interests, backgrounds, or experiences. These groups often emerge as communities that recognize a need or desire for a collective voice within the organization. Examples include networks for Black and ethnic minorities, employees experiencing menopause symptoms, or working parents.
As an employer, understanding the dynamics of these groups is essential. By fostering a supportive environment and establishing open lines of communication, employers can create valuable mechanisms that enhance staff engagement, empowerment, and retention.
There are two primary types of staff groups:
Employee Resource Groups (ERGs): These provide a safe space for individuals who share a specific characteristic, often related to equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI).
Staff Networks: These groups focus on shared interests or influencing organizational policies.
